I am having a hard time understanding why humans have decided to name all these parts on an ant, and why that is important.
No disrespect to all those in some obscure, highly specialized field of study: if you can make money doing what you love, more power to you. Still, I find it strange that someone can write a 700+ page book about ants and get a Pulitzer Prize. Of course he wasn’t writing about ants exclusively, people who get really into ants want to study their behavior in an attempt to, eventually, learn more about humans. And that is where these types of obscurities lose me; how can someone look at society, not understand it, and decide studying ants might shed some light. This is some form of naturalist worship, seeking to elevate nature over self, being consumed with every petiole and propodeum.
